MOTHER'S DAY

In the English page of the School Platform I proposed my students to talk about the meaning of the word MOTHER.

They made me speechless!!

MOTHER

If I could give you diamonds
For each rear you cried for me
If I could give you sapphires
For each truth you've helped me see
If I could you rubles
For the heartaches you've known
If I could give you pearls
For the wisdom you've shown

Then you would have a treasure, mother
That would mount up to the skies
That would almost reach
The sparkle in your kind and loving eyes.

But I have no pearls, no diamonds,
As I'm sure you're well aware
So I'll give you gifts...even more precious
My devotion, Love and Care.

Sofia, 11º B

M is for the million things she gives me
O means only that she's soft to hold
T for the things she tries to teach me
H is for her heart of purest gold
E for her eyes with love light shining
R means right and right she'll always be.

Happy Mother's Day

Consumerism

We live in a materialistic society. Nowadays, we are inluenced by the ads, by the big companies and by all the society, in order to buy, buy and buy...minute after minute. This is a huge problem, because people buy, mainly things they really don't need just, for the pleasure of buying or to be better than the others.
People don't pay attention to the true feelings like love, cooperation or help. Some people only want material gadgets and money; the more they have, the more they want. As a result, day after day, our society has become egocentric, selfish and not equal.
Young people, especially teens, are the most affected by this lifestyle. They prefer famous brands, mobile phones, computers and internet instead of friends, family and welfare which is really important.
Unfortunately, this is what happens nowadays and people aren't aware of the dangerous situation they are living in and I think the future will certainly be worse.

Salete, 11º B

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

I think I have a healthy lifestyle because I do exercise and I eat healthy food. Sometimes I eat junk food. Many people don't eat healthy food and don't do exercise. They drink too much, they smoke and they take drugs. So they put on a lot of weight. We must do exercise: ride a bike, play football, walk...and eat healthy food. If we do this, we will have a healthy lifestyle for many years.

St Valentine's Day

LOVE is...
Love is the greatest feeling,
Love is like a play,
Love is what I feel for you,
Each and every day,
Love is like a smile,
Love is like a song,
Love is a great emotion,
That keeps us going strong,
I love you with my heart,
My body and soul,
I love the way I keep loving,
Like a love I can't control,
So remember when youe eyes meet mine,
I love you with all my heart,
And I poured my entire soul into you,
Right from the very start.

I love you my Valentine!

Salete, 11º B

My dear:

If I could be anything in the world I would want to be a teardrop because I would be born in your eyes, live on your cheeks and die on your lips.
If I could just have one wish, I would wish: comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warmy our heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth, love to complete your life.

There is only ONE happiness in life, to love and be loved.

I love you and most of all I love the way you love me.
Happy Valentine's Day!

What are the possible implications of cloning to society?

According to Biology, cloning is a natural or artificial process by which clones are produced. Clones are individuals with the same genetic information as those they come from.
What are the possible implications of a cloning process?
Cloning can be seen as a lifesaving science , or, for others, as carrying many risks to society.
Cloning brings us many benefits, such as:

Cells could be used to develop a cure for cancer;
The infertile couples will have the possibility of having babies;
The cells could get rid of the need for animals in experiment;
Endangered species can be saved;
Tetraplegics could walk again.

However, not everything can be perfect and there are, of course, risks in this process:

Misuse of cloning (for profit in the black market);
Loss of genetic variability;
It makes us less special (replaceble);
Aging early, low immunity and malformations;
The clones could suffer discrimination and psychological problems;
Religious and ethical issues are implicit in the process;
Cloning could go wrong and produce deformed offspring;
An army of clones could be produced to fight wars.

Some lessons ago I told my students to describe someone they like and admire very much...here we have some of their works.

Jensen Ackles is a kind, hard- working man. He is a generous person, caring with the people he likes .

His fans describe him as loyal, reliable and responsible in the work.

He gets a bit nervous when he can’t do something i in his first time.

I think he’s a very honest person.

Physically Jensen is tall, young and elegant.

His eyes are blue and he has got short brown hair and his face is oval.

Adriana, 10º B

Justin Timberlake is a hard-working, imaginative singer/dancer. He invited some famous rappers (T.I., Snoop Dog, 50 Cent) to work with him, so he is very proud of his work. In his concerts, he is demanding but also funny and cheerful. His success changed him. Now, he is a little conceited, vain and sometimes rude.
He is tall, muscular,well built, slim, star-looking and...handsome. This singer has got short wavy fair hair, an oval face, blue eyes and a pointed nose. His skin is tanned and fresh.
I have been in love with this perfect man since I saw him dancing in a fabulous show!!

Soraia, 10º B

Walter Disney

Walter Disney was a multiple Academy Award-winning American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

For me, Walter was a great and fascinating man!

Physically he was well-built. He was slim and tall, had small, brown eyes and had also brown hair.
He had an oval face, short-haired and a pointed nose.
He even had a moustache.

I think he was a very intelligent and clever man. He was sociable, honest, polite, caring (especially with children); not conceited, strict and over-sensitive…
Oh.. He contributed so much to the cinema development! I think that he died proud with is work.

Mother's Day

These were some of the works done by the students on the theme Mother's Day

I love my mother.
She is a very important person in my life and for me she is a good friend.
She is a star and one example to follow.
I never forget her, because she is in my heart.
If I need her, she is always there…
My mother is intelligent, sweet, beautiful and caring.

Ana Sofia e Adriana

Earth without Sun, people without oxygen, school without pupils, football without ball, sky without stars… So am I without you, this is… nothing!

You are the greatest thing in my life, simply everything. I wish you a happy day. A wonderful life!

Well, I would like to say more pretty words but when I speak about you my heart and my mind stay blocked.
With a kiss

Sofia

Internet

Internet is the best thing that has happened to man since the birth of the electricity. Indeed, with the Internet at our fingertips, we can learn a new language, meet new friends, travel across the universe, take a virtual trip to Tahiti, learn about the mating habits of the North African Woody Loon, sail the seven seas, correspond with friends, tell companies what you think, do research, play games, watch movies, and yes, even watch TV. Internet makes the whole world connected, everybody can talk to anyone. This makes the world seem so small… which really is !!
I love the Internet for all the resources it puts at my disposal, but it definitely has its dark side too… which is so very easy to avoid! Internet can be good in the right hands but on the other hand we can harm ourselves deeply if we go into the wrong ways.
Internet, in my opinion, is like going on the streets ... we must have have discipline: you cross the street with your eyes open, you stay away from bad areas, you need to know which places are good to be visited, you are watchful for thugs and thieves.
I think that Internet is a wonderful resource which will give you the answer to anything in the world!!!

Bullying???!!!!

Can you imagine how awful one feels
To wake up afraid every day?
Can you imagine how lonely one feels
To feel too sad to play?
Can you imagine how you might feel
If this happens to you?
What if others were standing by
While someone was bullying you?
Maybe it's time for us all to say
Bullying people is not okay.

Today is April Fools' Day, sometimes called All Fools' Day. In Portugal we call it "Dia das Mentiras". It is one of the most funny days of the year because people play with their friends telling them some imaginative and convincing lies, but it is all for fun...

21st March - Poetry World Day ... and Day of the Tree

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or natures changing course untrimm'd:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest,
Nor shall death brag thou wandrest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Father's Day is a special day for everyone. We use this day to honor our fathers all over the world. In Portugal we celebrate Father's Day on March 19th, but in the United Kingdom and United States of America it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
Father is the one who is our first hero, our coach, our support. He is someone we look up to. He can make our frowns go upside down...in a split second.
How do you celebrate Father's Day? What is the best present you can give to your father? Tell us about it.

To my Daddy...

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,

He called it ...Dad

With a kiss

Easter is always in Spring, a time of new beginnings, a time of joy celebration.
For Christians it is not just a day for chocolate eggs but one of special church services. They celebrate the day Jesus triumphed over death, bringing new life here and now to all who follow him and the certainty of life after death.
And you? How do you celebrate Easter? Tell us about it.

Easter

Easter is the time for holidays, celebration and a time for giving…chocolate eggs. But Easter means much more than that…

It is the oldest and most important Christian festivity, the celebration of the Jesus Christ’s death and and coming to life again. For Christians, the dawn of Easter Sunday with its message of new life is the high point of the Christian year.

Easter story includes Maundy Thursday ( the last supper leading to the Eucharist), Good Friday (the day on which Jesus was crucified) and Easter Day ( the day on which Jesus came back to life).

Why does the date of Easter move?

Easter has a moveable date because it changes every year. Easter Sunday can be on any date from March 22 to April 25.

The reason for this is based on the lunar calendar (moon) rather than our more well-known solar one.

Easter always falls on the first Sunday following the Full Moon (the Paschal Full Moon) or after the spring Equinox (March 20 or 21). If the Full Moon falls on a Sunday then Easter is the next Sunday.

Soraia, 10º B

March or April

  • Good Friday (the Friday before Easter Day) , on this day people celebrate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
  • In the UK a lot of people eat hot cross buns ( small round cakes) containing dried fruit and species with a cross on the top.
Ana Maria, 10º B

Easter celebrates the ressurrection of Jesus, which Christians believe occurred on the third day after his crucifixion. It is time of chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks and coloured eggs.

The Easter bunny ha sits origin in pre-Christian fertility lore. The Hare and the Rabbit were the most fertile animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the Spring season.

Of all the symbols associated with Easter the egg, the symbol of fertility and new life, is the most identifiable. The customs and traditions of using eggs have been associated with Easter for centuries.

Originally Easter eggs were painted with bright colours to represent the sunlight of spring and were used in Easter-egg rolling contests or given as gifts.
